Every fall, dozens of bulls in the Arctic tundra compete for dominance over the herd and mate with females.
Located in the far north of Scandinavia, the Arctic tundra is a vast expanse of land with an extremely harsh climate. However, this place is home to hundreds of musk cows, a rather large ungulate.
Every fall, they organize a “great war” to compete for the position of dominance in the herd, as well as for the right to mate with the female. This is one of the fiercest in the wild as each adult bull weighs up to 400kg and they rush into each other at a speed of nearly 40km / h.
According to scientists, although this butting can lead to the death of any male musk ox, the percentage is quite small. Because, on the head of each cow there is a thick cushion located at the base of the horns, protecting them from strong impacts.
After the fierce butting process, the loser will have to leave the herd, and the winner will have the right to rule. However, in the fall of next year, it must continue to fight to protect its “throne”.
