SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – A happy, sweet reunion between an unlikely dog-and-cat duo separated when their family surrendered them touched the hearts of all of the workers at a San Diego animal center.
The 18-month-old shepherd blend Ami absolutely smothered 9-month-old brown tabby Mikaela with kisses when they reunited Thursday at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe. Ami showed absolutely no signs of forgetting her best feline friend, center spokeswoman Jessica Gercke said in a statement.
Ami, whose name means “friend” in French, connected immediately with Mikaela the moment their former family brought the tiny tabby kitty into their home.
When the family had to move out of the country, however, they didn’t want to put the two through a long quarantine process. So the family decided to surrender the pets to the rescue group Volunteers in Defense of Animals, or VIDA.
Ami and Mikaela’s distinct difference in size kept them apart for a time, as the pair had to stay in different-sized pens.
VIDA brought the dog and cat to the animal shelter, hoping their placement there would help them find a perfect home together.
